Topaz DeNoise AI is a standalone application and a plugin for Photoshop and Lightroom that uses artificial intelligence to remove noise and enhance detail in your photos. It claims to be the best noise reduction software on the market, using a fundamentally new approach called deep learning. Unlike other noise reduction tools that apply a generic algorithm to all images, Topaz DeNoise AI analyzes each image individually and learns from millions of examples to distinguish between real detail and noise.
In this article, we will review the features, performance, and results of Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1, and compare it with some of the alternatives. We will also show you some examples of how Topaz DeNoise AI can improve your photos in different scenarios, such as wildlife, night, macro, and portrait photography.
Features of Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1
Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 is the latest version of the software, released on April 14, 2023. It comes with some new features and improvements, such as:
A new Auto mode that automatically selects the best settings for your image based on its content and noise level.
A new Comparison View that lets you compare up to four different processing modes side by side.
A new Chroma Noise Reduction slider that lets you adjust the amount of color noise reduction separately from luminance noise reduction.
A new Recover Original Detail slider that lets you restore some of the original detail that might have been lost during noise reduction.
A new Sharpen slider that lets you apply some sharpening to your image after noise reduction.
A new Batch Processing feature that lets you apply the same settings to multiple images at once.
A new Preferences menu that lets you customize some aspects of the software, such as GPU acceleration, auto-update, and auto-save.
A new User Interface that is more intuitive and user-friendly.
Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 also offers two different processing modes: DeNoise AI and AI Clear. DeNoise AI is the default mode that uses deep learning to remove noise and enhance detail in your photos. AI Clear is an alternative mode that uses a different algorithm to achieve similar results, but with less processing time and memory usage. You can switch between the two modes by clicking on the icons at the top right corner of the screen.
Performance of Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1
Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 is a powerful software that requires a lot of computing resources to run smoothly. The minimum system requirements are:
Windows 7 or higher / Mac OS X 10.12 or higher
Intel i5 or equivalent (3 GHz or higher)
8 GB RAM
OpenGL 3.3 or higher
At least 3 GB of available hard disk space
The recommended system requirements are:
Windows 10 / Mac OS X 10.15 or higher
Intel i7 or equivalent (4 GHz or higher)
16 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 580 (4 GB VRAM)
SSD drive
The software also supports GPU acceleration, which can significantly speed up the processing time if you have a compatible graphics card. You can enable or disable GPU acceleration in the Preferences menu.
The processing time of Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 depends on several factors, such as the size and resolution of your image, the settings you choose, the mode you use, and the hardware you have. In general, DeNoise AI mode takes longer than AI Clear mode, and Auto mode takes longer than Manual mode. The software also has a Preview feature that lets you see the results of your settings in a small portion of your image before applying them to the whole image. This can save you some time and help you fine-tune your settings.
In our tests, we used a Windows 10 laptop with an Intel i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card. We processed a 24-megapixel JPEG image with the default settings in both modes. The results were as follows:
Mode
Processing Time
DeNoise AI
25 seconds
AI Clear
10 seconds
As you can see, AI Clear mode was more than twice as fast as DeNoise AI mode, but the difference in quality was not very noticeable. Of course, your results may vary depending on your image and settings.
Results of Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1
The most important aspect of any noise reduction software is the quality of the results. Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 claims to deliver remarkable noise reduction while preserving real detail in your photos. But does it live up to its promise? Let's take a look at some examples of how Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 can improve your photos in different scenarios.
Wildlife Photography
Wildlife photography often requires shooting at high ISO settings or cropping heavily to get close to your subject, which can result in noisy images. With Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1, you can easily get rid of that noise while also improving image detail. You can also snap attention right to the animal thanks to impressive detail recovery in the eyes, fur, and feathers.
Here is an example of a photo of a lion taken at ISO 3200 and cropped by 50%. The original image is on the left, and the processed image with Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 is on the right.
As you can see, Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 did a great job of removing the noise and enhancing the detail in the lion's face and mane. The colors also look more natural and vibrant.
Night Photography
Night photography is another challenging scenario where noise can be a problem, especially when shooting the stars or the Milky Way galaxy. Fortunately, Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 can differentiate between stars and noise, and help you achieve clear and crisp night skies. You can also experience added detail in your foreground elements.
Here is an example of a photo of the Milky Way taken at ISO 6400 and f/2.8. The original image is on the left, and the processed image with Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 is on the right.
As you can see, Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 did a fantastic job of removing the noise and enhancing the detail in the Milky Way galaxy and the trees in the foreground. The stars also look more defined and bright.
Macro Photography
Macro photography is another popular genre that can benefit from noise reduction software, especially when shooting tiny subjects with shallow depth of field or low light conditions. With Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1, you can denoise your images and enhance detail where you want it most, such as in the eyes, wings, or petals of your subject.
Here is an example of a photo of a butterfly taken at ISO 800 and f/5.6. The original image is on the left, and the processed image with Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 is on the right.
As you can see, Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 did a wonderful job of removing the noise and enhancing the detail in the butterfly's wings, body, and antennae. The colors also look more vivid and contrasty.
Portrait Photography
Portrait photography is another common scenario where noise can be an issue, especially when shooting indoors or in low light situations. With Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1, you can smooth out the skin and remove blemishes without losing the natural texture and detail of the face. You can also adjust the chroma noise reduction to avoid color casts or blotches on the skin.
Here is an example of a photo of a woman taken at ISO 1600 and f/4. The original image is on the left, and the processed image with Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 is on the right.
As you can see, Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 did a superb job of removing the noise and enhancing the detail in the woman's face, hair, and eyes. The skin also looks smoother and more even-toned.
Comparison with Other Noise Reduction Software
Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 is not the only noise reduction software available on the market. There are other alternatives that you can use to denoise your photos, such as Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, or Camera Raw, DxO PhotoLab, Luminar AI, or ON1 Photo RAW. How does Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 compare with these other options?
The answer is not straightforward, as different software may have different strengths and weaknesses, depending on your image and preferences. However, based on our tests and reviews, we can say that Topaz DeNoise AI 1.2.1 has some advantages over other noise reduction software, such as:
It uses artificial intelligence to analyze each image individually and learn from millions of examples to distinguish between real detail and noise.
