Cisco Asa 5505 Activation Key 15

Cisco Asa 5505 Activation Key 15

The Cisco ASA 5505 is a security appliance that provides firewall, VPN, and other features for small and medium-sized networks. The ASA 5505 requires a license activation key to enable some of the features, such as AnyConnect Premium Peers, Advanced Endpoint Assessment, and Shared License. The license activation key is a 40-character alphanumeric string that can be obtained from Cisco or a reseller.

This article will explain how to obtain and activate a license activation key for the ASA 5505, and how to check the status and expiration date of the license. It will also describe the available licenses for each model and the benefits of using a time-based activation key.

How to Obtain a License Activation Key

To obtain a license activation key for the ASA 5505, you need to have the following information:

  • The serial number of the ASA 5505. You can find it by entering the show version command on the ASA CLI, or by looking at the label on the back of the device.

  • The Product Authorization Key (PAK) for the feature you want to enable. The PAK is a 20-character alphanumeric string that is provided by Cisco or a reseller when you purchase the feature. You can also find it on the license certificate or email that you received from Cisco.

Once you have the serial number and the PAK, you can generate the license activation key by following these steps:

  • Go to the [Cisco Product License Registration] website and log in with your Cisco account.

  • Select "Get New" under "Licenses" and choose "Security Products" as the product family.

  • Select "ASA 5500 Series Adaptive Security Appliances" as the product and enter the serial number of your ASA 5505.

  • Enter the PAK for the feature you want to enable and click "Submit".

  • You will receive an email with the license activation key and instructions on how to activate it on your ASA 5505.

How to Activate a License Activation Key

To activate a license activation key on your ASA 5505, you need to enter it on the ASA CLI using the following command:

activation-key <key>

where <key> is the 40-character alphanumeric string that you received from Cisco. For example:

activation-key 0xa339d567 0xa8df641f 0x9193bd58 0xc6344cb4 0x031bfbaa

The ASA will verify the validity of the key and prompt you to accept or reject it. If you accept it, the ASA will reboot and apply the new license. You can check the status of the license by entering the show version command on the ASA CLI. You should see something like this:

ciscoasa# show version Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 9.12 (2) Firepower Extensible Operating System Version 2.6 (1.141) Device Manager Version 7.12 (2) ---omitted for brevity--- Licensed features for this platform: Maximum VLANs : 50 perpetual Inside Hosts : Unlimited perpetual Failover : Active/Active perpetual Encryption-DES : Enabled perpetual Encryption-3DES-AES : Enabled perpetual Security Contexts : 2 perpetual Carrier : Disabled perpetual AnyConnect Premium Peers : 15 perpetual AnyConnect Essentials : Disabled perpetual Other VPN Peers : 100 perpetual Total VPN Peers : 115 perpetual AnyConnect for Mobile : Enabled perpetual AnyConnect for Cisco VPN Phone : Enabled perpetual Advanced Endpoint Assessment : Enabled perpetual Shared License : Enabled perpetual Total TLS Proxy Sessions : 320 perpetual Botnet Traffic Filter : Disabled perpetual Cluster : Disabled perpetual Serial Number: 9A5KG6HTQSB Running Permanent Activation Key: 0xa339d567 0xa8df641f 0x9193bd58 0xc6344cb4 0x031bfbaa

Note the changes in the license features, such as the number of AnyConnect Premium Peers, Total VPN Peers, and Total TLS Proxy Sessions. Also note the activation key that is running on the ASA.

How to Check the Expiration Date of a License

Some licenses for the ASA 5505 are time-based, which means they expire after a certain period of time. For example, you can obtain a time-based activation key for AnyConnect Premium Peers for a specific time period, such as 30 days or 1 year. This can be useful if you need to temporarily increase the number of VPN users or test a new feature.

To check the expiration date of a time-based license, you can enter the show activation-key command on the ASA CLI. You should see something like this:

ciscoasa# show activation-key Serial Number: 9A5KG6HTQSB Running Permanent Activation Key: 0xa339d567 0xa8df641f 0x9193bd58 0xc6344cb4 0x031bfbaa Running Time-based Activation Key: 0x7b6c8f3a 0x7c9a2d9f 0x8b3e4f6a 0x9c4d5e7b 0x0a1b2c3d Time-based Activation Key Expiration Date: 10:00:00 UTC Sep 30 2023 Licensed features for this platform: Maximum VLANs : 50 perpetual Inside Hosts : Unlimited perpetual Failover : Active/Active perpetual Encryption-DES : Enabled perpetual Encryption-3DES-AES : Enabled perpetual Security Contexts : 2 perpetual Carrier : Disabled perpetual AnyConnect Premium Peers : 25 (Time-based license in use) AnyConnect Essentials : Disabled perpetual Other VPN Peers : 100 perpetual Total VPN Peers : 125 (Time-based license in use) AnyConnect for Mobile : Enabled perpetual AnyConnect for Cisco VPN Phone : Enabled perpetual Advanced Endpoint Assessment : Enabled perpetual Shared License : Enabled perpetual Total TLS Proxy Sessions : 320 (Time-based license in use) Botnet Traffic Filter : Disabled perpetual Cluster : Disabled perpetual The Running Time-based Activation Key is not valid, permanent key is valid instead.

Note the running time-based activation key and its expiration date. Also note the changes in the license features, such as the number of AnyConnect Premium Peers, Total VPN Peers, and Total TLS Proxy Sessions. The ASA will use the time-based license until it expires, and then revert to the permanent license.
